An estimated 20% of children and adolescents will have a mental health disorder [1] at one point in their lives. Mental health disorders can hinder their development and personal growth and impact how they function and interact with others at home, at school and in society. The stigmatisation and discrimination they experience can also aggravate their situation. Fortunately, early intervention, care, and the appropriate treatment can help prevent and reduce the impact of mental disorders on youth and their families.
At the first session, the therapist will meet with the youth and his or her parents.
The therapist will conduct an assessment before determining the right course of care.
The therapist may alternate between individual sessions and sessions with the parents.
For acute cases, the doctor may prescribe appropriate medication.
The therapists at the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Service can also treat cases that involve complex psychosocial situations.
